This was the first time working with Suzanna and she was so awesome. She needed this travel blog book done as a gift by a tight deadline and we were able to accommodate her schedule because she was quick in getting us everything we needed and was prompt in her replies and proofing, making it possible to get this book done and to print within a short time. She wrote me a sweet note once the book arrived too ...

"I received the book Friday. It looks so good I could cry! Thank you for doing such an amazing job so quickly. I am beyond happy with the result. I will definitely keep you in mind for future projects! (I now feel inspired to organize the rest of my life photos...you will probably be hearing form me again soon!)"

I thought it would be fun to create this cover using a stockphoto of an old suitcase and then put her photos inside and personalize the outside. We used old maps to decorate the background of the cover and pages.

This book could be a nightmare with all the photos and added comments but I have to say that Jill is the easiest person to work with and ranks her as one of my favorite clients! I was so excited when I initially designed this book and still love the pages and colors as it always seem to go with the mood and flavor of the book. Chalese has designed the page layouts of all 3 books and really does a kick butt job at it! As a matter of fact she Chalese just finished up Vol. 2 to this 2010 book so I better get the proof book ready!!

This design I did for her a few years ago has proven to be pretty popular and I have to say that it works great as a nice subtle background and so easy to change the colors. I think she has used each of these colors for a cover now and I bet it makes a great photobook set on her shelf!

This wedding book was a gift to the bride from her sister, also the wedding photographer. We have been working on this book for a long time and I think we were both excited to finally get it to print. We went with nice neutral greys and an understated theme. It was most important for Tina to focus on her friends and family. She found ways to personalize this book but the most touching was the touching tribute to their decesed fathers at the end.

Leslie was so easy to work with but she had a hard time deciding on exactly what colors she wanted but we just kept working together until we found something that she thought represented her style and was flattering for her photos yet was easy to read and we went with black with grey deco elements throughout with nice bright white text and borders. The Hot Air Balloon Ride - Step by Step

I thought it would be fun to show you a little step-by-step of the process that we do to make a fully Illustrated page. Here is a sample from the book "The Hot Air Balloon Ride" written by Emily Hurst.

STEP 1: Once we receive the complete typed version of a manuscript along with the authors notes we have the artist do a concept sketch of what the characters should look like. We then send them to the client for approval before continuing. As you can see we did changed them a little, we made the shorter and took off the material on the top of the curtians.

STEP 2: The first thing we do is to have everyone involved sit and do a reading of the manuscript and figure out how to block it into the number of pages we need to get it into. We then talk about each and every page and what it should look like. We will then do some thumbnails of the page until we agree on the basic concept.

STEP 3: If the client chooses we would then send a refined sketch. Then the sketch is inked by hand and scanned into the computer for coloring.

STEP 4: Our illustrations are digitally colored usually using Adobe Photoshop. This gives us a lot of control on the final image, we not only can make color adjustments to the page but can completely change the color of each piece. When we first started this book we made the curtains blue and quickly realized that they needed to stand out in contrast against the sky and with the raccoon so we changed them to red.

STEP 5: Typically each piece is painted on it's own layer so we can reuse part of the illustration if necessary, for example if we wanted to isolate the owl and use it somewhere else in the book we can and that gives us a lot of options, saves us time and saves our clients money!

STEP 6: Once we finish the illustration we send a proof to the client and make any minor changes requested. It is then sent to the layout artist where the page layout, color and font choices are made and then put together. Another proof is sent to the client to approve before being sent to the printer.

"The Special Easter Basket"

We were so excited to work on this project with author Deb Mayernik, who has a couple ideas for some holiday books with Easter being up to bat first. The idea was to market these books to young children as a keepsake book and annual event between parent and child with the inclusion of an annual Easter photo in the back, each year looking back at the year before. Autumn had a lot of fun illustrating the chunky artwork as did we putting them onto bright colorful pages. We are working on her Christmas book now so look for that soon!

I am actually excited to try more! Anyway, Autumn did the illustrations which really capture the feel that Barb was after. Part Six - Distributing Your Press Release

Now that you have your press kit it’s time to do your research and begin pitching to the media.
You can submit your press release to the media either through email or through the postal service.
You can pay to have your press release distributed for you but you don’t have to!

Jennifer Mattern at nakedpr.com says… It’s not impossible (or even hard) to distribute your press release on your own, especially if you’re trying to save money.

In light of that fact, I’ve put together a list of 5 easy steps you can follow for more effective free press release distribution:

Choose one or two free press release distribution sites (any more than 3-5 is just a waste of your time, assuming it’s worth anything). Choose based on which ones will get the release added to news engines. Just because some bigger distribution sites (who will remain nameless) charge an arm and a leg for this service, not all do. For example, PR.com’s free option will pretty much always get your release picked up in Google News (I’ve never had it fail yet). Now you’re available via search… yippie!
Send it to the Associated Press. It never hurts to try, and if they deem your release newsworthy enough to pick up, you just might get some decent “real” media coverage out of it. Just email or fax the release to the appropriate editor, writer, or regional bureau depending on your location and news.
Send it to your local newspaper or other media with a local spin on it. It won’t take more than a few minutes for you to add a local spin to the intro and / or headline of the press release. Send it to the most relevant journalist or editor at your local paper. Smaller papers especially eat that stuff up when a local is doing anything remotely newsworthy. Try to build a relationship with the editor or writer whenever possible while you’re at it.
Send it directly to niche or industry outlets. If you know of the top blogs, magazines, or websites in your niche, see if they have press release submission guidelines, and submit it directly to them. Don’t just assume they’ll find you through Google news or a press release distribution site. Work on the bigger ones first, and submit to as many as you have time for. If you get bigger pickups, they’ll often lead to smaller niche blogs and such copycatting the story anyway. Again, try to build relationships if you can.
Add your press releases to your own website or blog. Why is this so often ignored or neglected? Some clients complain when I suggest it, saying “well, I don’t want duplicate content on my site.” Well, if you give a damn about promoting your site, get the f*ing releases up there and quit whining about duplicate content! Who the hell cares about duplicate content? Maybe it’s just me, but I thought the purpose of a press release was to bring exposure. It can’t do that if you sit on it. On top of putting the news out to your regular readers, customers, or visitors, it also allows you to archive your releases for journalists who visit the site wanting to learn more about your company or site history. If you don’t have a press room or at least a press release archive, ADD ONE!!! And when it’s on your site, you can take that opportunity to add all the little social media tools and gizmos that your heart desires, add commenting (especially if it’s on a blog), or frankly do whatever gets you off in the moment. Add it to del.icio.us. Digg it. Do whatever the hell you want with it. Just publish the thing, and be done with it already! Why people refuse to grasp this concept is just beyond me. It’s easy… promise.

Part Five - The Press Kit

The press or media kit is a set of promotional materials that are to be distributed for promotional purposes. Not everyone will need a full blown press release kit but you should have a copy of your basic author information. Here are some things that you can include:

· Basic Biography

· Author Photograph

· Book Information - Including the full title, your name, publisher, date published, and ISBN.

· Order Information - where the book can be purchased ie. Amazon.com or URL to your bookstore.

· Book Cover Image – even if it is just a B&W photocopy

· Reviews

· Media List – list of appearances

· Bookmarks & Postcards

Include your contact info on every page

Not only should you have a hardcopy of your press kit but if you have a website it is a good idea to post your materials online so you can easily include a link to them when necessary.

Your release should not exceed 500 words in length.

Avoid excessive use of adjectives and stick to ordinary language.

If you are self-publishing it is your responsibility to market and promote your own book.
There are 3 ways to market your book – Advertising, Promotions and Publicity.

Advertising – this is not usually an effective method to sell your book and can end up costing you more than you make. It is difficult to find your audience and unless you are a big name author major publishing companies seldom give books advertising campaigns.

Publicity – Any 3^rd party endorsement can help you reach large audiences. It usually requires little to no spending and is your greatest opportunity to create success for your book.

Promotions – These are discounts and materials that will encourage people to essentially buy your book.
This might include, coupons, posters, displays, bookmarks or postcards

Start with a marketing plan! It does not have to take a lot of money but it does require your time – even just 15 minutes a day can make a difference.

Part Two - Creating Your Book

Ok, I don’t want to spend too much time on this for fear of sounding like one big commercial but here we go … The first step to making a book is getting your content in order!

Once you have written your book make sure it is exactly how you want it. To be sure your grammar and spelling is correct you may want to hire an editor /proofreader. It’s not cheap (usually about $35 an hour) but is necessary if you want your book to be professional. (We don’t personally do this but can refer you to someone)
Have a vision for your book. Look at books that are your competition and write the names of titles and Illustrators that you like. This will help your designer understand what you are looking for and save you both a lot of time.
Be sure to know what your needs are – What size book do you want to make? Hardcover or Soft? How much do you want to spend? Your designer wants to work with you, let them know what your budget is and it can actually save you money! Where do you want to sell your book? Do you need to register a copyright? Do you need an ISBN for your book? (look at my sight under “self-publishing” for more info)
Do you need Illustrations? We provide them but there are many talented artists that would love the chance to see their work in print, it just takes some research and asking around. (visit our "artwork" link)
Find the right designer! Research designers to see if they are a match for you. Don’t just go with the cheapest or the first one you come across, this is your baby and you are going to be investing your time and money so be sure you are compatible with whoever you are working with. TIP: Check their design schedule to make sure your project is done within time-line you need.
Once you have your designer, ask questions. Check out their contract or work agreement to see if there are any hidden costs. Know what the bottom line is.
After your book has been designed you will want to be sure you have thoroughly proofed your book before going to print and then you should have just one book printed before placing a large order, books always look a little different once you have them in your hands!

Once your book is made and is exactly like you envisioned it to be then it’s time to market it!

Recently we made some templates for sale for clients that wanted to make their own book so I came up with some baby styled images that could be used as "stickers" to be used with a Photoshop file. I did the artwork and Autumn was kind enough to do the line-work and coloring.
I just love how these turned out - aren't they the cutest?! Oh, I forgot to be modest ... I mean they're ok.

Madeline contacted us to help her put together a book to start off a series of gift booklets and needed some art for the cover and spot illustrations inside. She told us exactly what she was looking for - some beach scenes. There were to be 2 that were similar in description ... beach & land on the left with trees and ocean so I painted the cover art and my daughter painted the art for the back (also used on the postcard below) to get two different looks.

Here is the first book that Autumn illustrated for PP. This was commissioned by Authors Meredith and Joshua Braunstein, both producers for Nickelodeon.

It is a book about their son and the challenges of a young child wearing glasses. Meredith wanted the character to resemble their son, Zach and sent us photos for other characters in the story. Autumn really was able to capture the essence of their little boy.

SELF-PUBLISHING
Part One – What's it all about?

Traditional book publishers have recently been hit hard, making it very difficult for the unknown author to get their foot in the door. Many smaller publishers are going out of business with the rise of print-on-demand (POD) services growing. This, combined with the ability to sell online and reach a world-wide audience, means that the playing field is leveled and gives those who want to publish the ability to see their work in print.

Why Self-Publish?

First of all – it’s easy! By using professional designers (like ourselves) you can now turn your content into a professional looking book.
It’s cost effective. POD suppliers only print your book when there is an order and this saves on over-buying by the publisher and /or author now frantic to hawk their wares.
Profit Margins are greater. POD’s also allow you to receive a larger profit from each book sold, much more than the royalties from a traditional publisher.
Great Quality. The quality of POD books have come a long way and rival that of any printer. No more digital looking images means your book looks professional.
Amazon Listings – need I say more? You can now have your title listed with the big boys. It’s easy to get your book listed on sites like Amazon and help you find you find your audience!
Self-publishing can also help you to present your book to a major publisher. For one, you can show them what your book might look like and two, if you can prove sales you are more likely to get signed.

Greeting Book 2 is the second book we have helped design for Madeline Pragnell in her series of greeting card booklets that seconds as a flip-book and include poetry & sayings along with a place for a personal message to the receiver. After turning many clients blogs into a book I decided to do my own. I was so excited when it arrived...I have spent so much time in the past putting together photo albums and scrapbooks and after looking at this I will NEVER do it again. I have spent a lot of time on my personal blog so it is awesome to have a hard copy of it. It is a family yearbook that I can order for each of my kids. Now I know why I have so many repeat bloggers this year! I can't wait to go back and do my 2008. I also made this cute matching planner and will be offering this for future orders.

This was a perfect way to capture not only the photos while she was pregnant through his first year but also what his mom felt during that time along with each month's new milestones. Here is another Blog Book that I just finished that chronicles the family events of the Fischer family from 2006-2008 based on an online blog written by Jessica. This book was huge! It is 278 pages and the only way we could fit everything was to do double pages, the pages were designed using custom wallpaper and her color choices. This big 11x13 Landscape book is serving triple duty as a baby book and family photo album & journal. Ya! I got my book today ... Well I like to get them too!
I was invited to be part of Blurb's PDF Beta Program. They asked me to create a book using a Adobe InDesign and to upload with a new system for a more professional way to create books.
As a thank you they gave me this 11x13 270 page Hardcover ImageWrap book!
This baby is big and beautiful, just take a look at some of the pages ...

The quality of the images was amazing. The colors were true to my calibrated monitor using their printer profiles so I have confidence to make books without worry of color casts. I was truly impressed with the photo quality - no pixlating or digitizing of the images!

I have to say that I now have more creative control than ever. This new way will not only save me time, so I can concentrate on the design end, but it allows me to make changes on the fly to better serve my customers needs.
